RESOUNDING THRESHOLDS
Sounding Brass
This video shows close-ups of the solenoid [a solenoidconverts electrical energy into mechanical work.] placed above the cymbal.
It's activated by the music rather than an electrical current and functions as a mallet moved by the sound sent to it, causing the solenoid to play the cymbal along to the music it's resonating. The selection of artists included in the playlist also provides an example of genres and periods. It is specific to the diversity of music made from the island and our diaspora.
This video documents my newest work, "Sounding Brass," as part of my solo exhibition, Resounding Thresholds at Vox Populi Gallery in Philadelphia, PA.
The sculpture is activated by a curated playlist consisting of songs by Puerto Rican Musicians such as Bad Bunny, Tito Puente, and Patchyman, which provide an example of the wide dynamic range that can be heard from this sound sculpture.
